Today's Dental Tip

Occlusion is the last assessment to make for a fully seated crown. Articulating foils and shim stock are needed to check for occlusion. Both crown and adjacent teeth should hold shim stock firmly in the intercuspal position (ICP).A large flame shaped diamond bur is used to reduce high areas. Once ICP has been re-established the excursions can be checked preferably with a different coloured foil. Occasionally, it may be necessary to adjust the tooth opposing a restoration to avoid crown perforation or exposure of rough opaque porcelain.

Tooth decay is amongst the top 3 chronic diseases in older adults. A recent study conducted in four family dental practices in North England found that a two of three patients age 40+ were at risk of cavities at the gum line, the most common and aggressive form of this disease in an aging population.

Cavities at the gum line are considered a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and are difficult to manage with fillings. And according to some reports; root caries is going to be the number 1 dental problem in among adults over the foreseeable time. Prevora™ (100 mg/ml) Dental Solution; a topical coating of high-strength chlorhexidine applied to the teeth of the patient by the dental professional in a short, painless appointment. Prevora uniquely releases chlorhexidine on the tooth over a long period, to inhibit the bacteria causing cavities. It is the first in-office treatment indicated specifically for adult caries prevention in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, CHX Technologies president announced at the International Association of Dental Research 89th General Session and Exhibition that treating pregnant women with chlorhexidine varnish (Prevora) can help prevent early childhood caries in their children, the The chlorhexidine varnish works better than fluoride varnish in female adolescents, and is effective against root caries. Chlorhexidine varnish takes 20 minutes to apply, and application can be done by a hygienist. It contains 10% chlorhexidine, is bactericidal for 3 days, and inhibits recolonization for 7 weeks, he said. He recommended 4 applications over the course of the first month, followed by 1 application 6 months later.
